In order to better understand these ovulatory issues we will need a basic vocabulary.

Amenorrhea: is when you do not have a period for 3 or more consecutive months.

Oligomenorrhea: is a term used to describe irregular periods.

Anovulation: is a term used to describe the absence of ovulation, with or without a menstrual bleed.

Hypothalmic Anovulation is when lifestyle factors cause you to stop ovulating. Stress, extreme weight loss, and excessive exercise can reduce the output of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalmus, which in turn causes the pituitary to reduce its production of FSH and LH. No ovulation occurs because FSH and LH are necessary for follicle and eggs to mature and be released from the ovary.

In order to better understand the causes of your ovulatory issues, it is important to understand what is happening to you hormonally.
