Women Veterans and Other Health Care Improvements Act

Update: April 4, 2014

On January 24, 2013, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) introduced the Women Veterans and Other Health Care Improvement Act S 131.  The bill will improve the reproductive assistance provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs to severely wounded, ill, or injured veterans and their spouses. It will also require the VA to provide adoption assistance and child care to veterans. On March 5, 2013, U.S. Representative Rick Larsen (D-WA) introduced the same bill in the House of Representatives (HR 958).

Infertility is a devastating diagnosis to receive and it is further complicated by lack of insurance coverage for most Americans. Medical benefits for active duty military and veterans do not include coverage for infertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). This places an added hardship on our servicemen and women and veterans with infertility.

Through the Women Veterans and Other Health Care Improvements Act, veterans have a chance at the family they always dreamed of. For many wounded veterans, assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF may be their only hope of ever having a biological child with their spouse/partner.

The Senate bill, S 131, was assigned to the Senate Veteran's Affairs Committee. The bill has been cleared by this committee to be voted on by the full Senate. The House bill, HR 958, was referred to the House Armed Services Military Personnel Committee, House Budget Committee, House Veterans' Affairs Committee and House Health Committee.
