Grassroots advocacy at its best in Minnesota

I recently returned from St. Paul, MN, exhilarated from RESOLVE’s Minnesota Advocacy Day where the family building community rallied together to protect access to gestational carrier surrogacy. More than 60 advocates – patients and professionals alike – traveled to the capitol building in St. Paul to educate their lawmakers about the reality of gestational carrier surrogacy, which has been under threat there in recent years. There is no question we are in, to put it mildly, a unique moment in America’s political history. This week ASRM and RESOLVE got together to compare notes, share intel, and discuss our ideas for approaches each organization might take on some pressing policy issues. What we noticed is that things “out there” felt different. Read more.

A couple weeks ago we were honored to share with our community that the hard work of so many RESOLVE advocates paid off and the MilCon-VA appropriations bill included an amendment that allows the Veterans Administration (VA) to offer IVF and adoption assistance to certain Veterans with a service-connected injury that caused their infertility. Worst Piece of Federal Legislation Ever Introduced

DI’ve seen a lot of bad legislation that would negatively impact  people with infertility from building their families introduced in state legislatures across the country. We’ve been fighting these bills – successfully – since the wave of anti-family bills started in 2008. But to say I was shocked when an amendment was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives a few weeks ago is an understatement.     Read more.

RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association is once again honored to support S 469, a bill introduced in the U.S. Senate on February 11, 2015 by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA). This bill vastly improves access to infertility care for our veterans and for wounded warriors. This year marked the largest Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. for the infertility community: 154 Advocates went on 155 scheduled appointments with Senators and Representatives. I hope everyone facing infertility was able to celebrate the holiday of love… whether that was with your partner, friend, or family. Because I can tell you that right now the infertility community isn’t feeling the love from 9 states and their anti-family legislation. I have been telling people for the past few weeks I feel like I am at the arcade playing the “Whac-A-Mole” game – as soon as we whack one dead, another mole (insert BILL), pops up. Read more.

You may have heard that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) drafted a National Action Plan on Infertility (my shorthand title) and that the plan was available for public comment. The comment period has now been extended to July 16, 2012, and you have a unique opportunity to voice your opinion. But really, does it matter if you, someone who is part of the infertility community, responds to the Action Plan? Yes, yes, and yes again! Here are my reasons why you should respond -- as well as information on how easy it is to respond (I even share some of my key takeaways and suggested comments!) Read more

Happy New Year! Time to get advocating!

January is always a time for people to reflect on the past year and make plans for the new year ahead. Expectations are high, goals are set, and the work begins.  We have the same strategy here at RESOLVE – especially on the policy front. We are planning for a very busy year indeed in terms of federal and state legislation.  Here is a primer on what to watch for and what to expect in 2012.

Federal legislation

The infertility community will be hard at work on getting additional co-sponsors for the Family Act, which is now in the House of Representatives as well as the U.S. Senate. While it will be a difficult year for any type of legislation gaining traction in Congress, we believe we have an excellent chance of seeing this bill gain many more co-sponsors and getting passed.  Watch for action on the extension of the many tax credits set to expire in December 2012, as the Adoption Tax Credit is one of those. We believe the Family Act so closely mirrors the Adoption Tax Credit that they could be passed (or extended) at the same time. The Adoption Tax Credit has received overwhelming bi-partisan support, and we believe it has a very good chance of receiving an extension. A key strategy in 2012 will be getting every fertility clinic in the U.S. to send letters of support for the Family Act to their Members of Congress.
