From Barbara Collura, President/CEO, RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association
RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association is shocked by the recent statements of U.S. Congressman Phil Gingrey (GA), suggesting women suffer infertility because they are too “uptight” and “tense,” and it is treated by advising patients to “just relax” and “drink a glass of wine.” These statements are completely misinformed and are surprising from a man who was a practicing Obstetrician/Gynecologist. Infertility is a disease that affects the reproductive function of men and women equally. The statements of Representative Gingrey about infertility are objectionable on many grounds:
We have come a long way in educating the public about the disease of infertility; comments such as this, from a Member of Congress and physician, harm the patient community and disparage the medical specialists who strive each day to provide the highest quality care to their patients who are trying to have children. RESOLVE has been serving the needs of women and men trying to overcome infertility and build a family in the U.S. since 1974.
