(December 20, 2012, McLean, VA) – RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association applauds the passage of the Women Veterans and Other Health Care Improvement Act of 2012 by the U.S. Senate. This legislation would expand the health care and reproductive treatment options available to wounded veterans.
The Women Veterans and Other Health Care Improvement Act of 2012 (S 3313) complements VA’s programs for women veterans and families of veterans by enhancing VA’s fertility treatment services, along with other programs. The bill provides for enhanced reproductive treatment and care options available to veterans, fertility treatment for spouses and surrogates of veterans, and adoption assistance.
As an early advocate of this legislation, RESOLVE continues to support any and all legislation that helps people with infertility gain access to necessary medical treatments. RESOLVE testified in support of this bill, and RESOLVE advocates shared their personal stories which helped influence lawmakers.
“No one living with infertility should also have to face the burden of not being able to afford treatment, especially our veterans,” said Barbara Collura, President/CEO, RESOLVE. “Those who put their own lives at risk and incur an injury that impacts their fertility need the resources to be able to have family. A person’s reproductive health, and treatment for it, is just as important as other health conditions.”
RESOLVE encourages the House of Representatives to pass the companion bill so that our wounded veterans can begin receiving this care as soon as possible. For more information about RESOLVE’s advocacy work, visit the Center for Infertility Justice at www.resolve.org.
