I wasn’t one of those kids who went off to college knowing what they wanted to be in life, right from the get-go. Initially majoring in Psychology, I thought I might explore career options involving Neuropsych. But after listening to my father’s experiences serving as a Medic in the US Army, I was touched by his genuine love and concern for the personal welfare of others in very unfortunate circumstances. It fueled my own desire to find a career that offered that same feeling, and after he passed, I chose to pursue nursing as a way to honor his memory. Yet, also being the practical person that I am, I decided to not waste those years of expensive credit hours that I’d already taken, so I ended up double majoring and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Southern Colorado.
As a new grad, I worked on the Medical Telemetry/Step-Down Units. Then one night at home, while I was flipping through TV channels, I began watching the PBS documentary “The Miracle of Life” and was instantly captivated. (You may roll your eyes, but it’s true.) I still remember the giddy excitement in my gut, and thinking to myself “I HAVE to find a way to be a part of this!” I spent the next few months researching the REI field, pouring over job listings daily, looking for a way to get my foot in the door. It was not an easy task, since I was as green as green could get, having zero work experience in OB/GYN or Labor & Delivery. But as luck would have it, I finally found an infertility clinic in southwest Denver that was willing to take a chance on me. I was so excited for the opportunity that I didn’t mind commuting for six months, before moving to Denver from my hometown of Colorado Springs.
Fast forward almost 12 years, and I am so grateful to still feel passionate about what I do. Guiding patients and coordinating their various treatment cycles keeps me engaged, whether it involves intercourse or IUI, IVF, FET, or Third Party Reproduction. I strive to be able to get to know patients on a personal level, being their cheerleader and advocate, celebrating their highs when they defy all odds, and providing meaningful support when they hit the lowest of lows. I’ve kept all the thank you cards, notes, and letters that I have received from patients over the years in a very special place to remind me of my goal as a nurse—to go above and beyond, all in the best interest of the patient. As we all know, this specialty has its own unique roller coaster ride of emotions. Yet, at the end of the day, I am honored to be a part of the journey with Dr. Smith and our patients, who become like family, at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
